TAS Occupation Lists indicate what professions are in high demand in the state and are needed to fill skill shortages. Everyone looking to apply for a Skilled Visa with nomination by Tasmania must have an occupation in one of those lists and meet the state requirements to be nominated.

If you are planning to apply for a permanent skilled nominated 190 visa or a temporary regional 491 visa in TAS, here is an important thing to know: Tasmania has switched to an invitation-only system so it’s not possible to apply for State Nomination directly anymore. It is necessary to first register in the Application Gateway, submit your Expression of Interest, and wait until the State “selects” you.

Priorities for invitation have been established, so please talk to us and we will access you case and advise you of all details.

Tasmania State Nomination Pathways and Requirements 2022/2023

Before talking about the TAS Occupation Lists, it is important to mention that the state has different migration pathways and candidates must meet the specific requirements established by TAS for each visa subclass:

Recent Graduates of Tasmania

491 – International Students completing a tertiary qualification in Tasmania (Trade Certificate, Diploma, Bachelor of higher) for a minimum of 1 academic year (40 weeks on CRICOS)
190 – 2 Academic years

Skilled professionals working full-time in Tasmania

491 – Must have worked for a minimum of 6 months for at least 20 hours a week in any skilled occupation.
If work has been on an occupation on the TOSOL, 3 months could be considered
Subcontractors only considered after 12 months

190 – 6 months full time – occupation on TOSOL mandatory

Established residence in Tasmania

491 – Living in Tasmania for at least 2 years and working part-time for a minimum period of time
190 – Living in Tasmania for at least 3 years and working part-time for a minimum period of time

Business Operators

491 only – Must have established and operated a business in Tasmania for at least 12 months that generated personal taxable income of at least 85 percent of the TSMIT ($45 815)

Offshore Applicants

491 – Must have a job offer in Tasmania or have been invited to apply

Once you meet the above criteria and if TAS agrees to nominate you, then you will be invited by SkillSelect to apply for the visa. However, you will only be invited by TAS, then the Department of Home Affairs, if you meet the basic requirements too:

  • Nominate an occupation on TAS Skilled Occupation list;
  • Meet the minimum English language requirement for your occupation;
  • Have a positive skills assessment in your nominated occupation;
  • Be under 45 years of age;
  • Achieve a minimum of 65 points in the points-test.

Tasmania Allocations numbers for 2022 – 2023

At every start of the financial year, states and territories are allocated the number of candidates they can nominate for each visa, what we call the “number of places”.  Tasmania has received a total of 3,360 places for 2022-2023, divided by:

  • 2,000 places for the Skilled Nominated (Subclass 190) visa
  • 1,350 places for the Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) Subclass 491 visa
  • 10 places for the Business Innovation and Investment Program
