South Australia Occupation List indicates what professions are needed to fill skill shortages in the State and can apply for a Visa via the Skilled Migration Program.

The processes and requirements for Regional Visas are updated annually in each State and Territory of Australia. South Australia has already released its 2023/24 Nomination Program, which is now open for applications for both visa Subclasses 190 and 491.

Anyone interested in applying for a Skilled Visa in South Australia must have an occupation on the South Australia occupation list and meet the basic requirements outlined by the Department of Home Affairs, in addition to the specific state requirements we will explain in this article.

South Australia’s 2023-24 Skilled Visa Nomination Program

Status: Open to applicants living in South Australia and overseas from 27 September.

SA Updates:

  • South Australia switched to an invitation-only system so for most of the Streams available it’s not possible to apply for State Nomination directly anymore. It is necessary to wait until the State “selects” your EOI;
  • The state will prioritise the retention of international graduates from South Australian education providers who fill areas of skills shortage and temporary visa holders;
  • Experienced overseas workers with skills in high demand in South Australia will be prioritized:
    • Trades and Construction
    • Defence
    • Health
    • Education
    • Natural and Physical Science
    • Social and Welfare Professionals
  • The state will also focus on highly skilled overseas workers who can make a strong contribution to the state’s fast-growing industries and projects of national priority. This includes people with:
    • experience working in the defence industry, and/or
    • highly specialised skills in the digital and critical technologies sectors.
  • Applications for state nomination for the Business Innovation and Investment visa (subclass 188) will not open this financial year;
  • Business or investor migrants who already hold a provisional visa can apply for nomination for the extension stream or permanent visa (subclass 888) in 2023–24 as these are not subject to a nomination cap.

Basic Requirements for all Applicants in South Australia

To apply for a permanent Skilled Nominated 190 visa or a temporary Regional 491 visa in South Australia, you must be pre-selected by the state and receive an invitation to apply for State Nomination. This system operates on an ‘invitation only’ basis. If SA agrees to nominate you, SkillSelect will invite you to apply for the visa.

To be selected by South Australia and invited by SkillSelect, you must first submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) with SkillSelect. You will only receive invitations from SA and the Department of Home Affairs if you meet the basic General Skilled Migration Visa requirements:

  • score at least 65 on the points test – unless SA requires a higher score;
  • have an occupation in the South Australia Skilled Occupation list;
  • have a positive skills assessment in your nominated occupation;
  • be under 45 years of age;
  • meet the minimum English language requirement for your occupation;
