SA Skilled Occupation Lists indicate what professions are in high-demand and are needed to fill skill shortages in the State. Everyone looking to apply for a Skilled Visa in SA must have an occupation in one of those lists and meet the state requirements.
To apply for a permanent skilled nominated 190 visa or a temporary regional 491 visa with nomination by South Australia, you must first check if your occupation is in the state list, then check which South Australia Migration Pathways are available for your occupation.
You will only be nominated by SA, then the Department of Home Affairs, if you meet these requirements:
- score at least 65 on the points test – unless SA requires a higher score;
- have an occupation in one of the South Australia Skilled Occupation lists;
- have a positive skills assessment in your nominated occupation;
- be under 45 years of age;
- meet the minimum English language requirement for your occupation;
South Australia State Nomination is open for applications from onshore and offshore. Be careful: not all pathways are open to all occupations! But before we go to the South Australia Occupation Lists, there are 6 pathways available in SA with different requirements for each one:
South Australia Migration Pathways
Recent Graduates of South Australia
- Must have completed a course in SA that is registered for a minimum of 46 CRICOS weeks;
- Must be currently working in SA in a job that is related to your nominated occupation (20 hours/week for the 491 visa and 30 hours/week for the 190 visa);
- Minimum work period varies according to occupation – must check SA Skilled Occupation lists;
- Qualification completed in SA may be restricted – must check the list
High Performing Graduates of South Australia
- Must have completed a Higher Education Degree in South Australia;
- Must meet minimum qualification requirements and have Proficient English;
- Must have a minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) which varies according to occupation – check SA Skilled Occupation lists
Skilled professionals working in South Australia
- Must be currently working in a job that is related to your nominated occupation in SA;
- Minimum work period varies according to occupation;
- Must have resided continuously in SA for the past five years;
- Must be currently working in a job that is NOT related to your nominated occupation in SA;
- Must be currently working for the past six months in SA in any occupation Skill Level 1, 2, 3 or Skill Level 4 Carer and Aide and must have at least 12 months total work experience in SA.
Highly Skilled and Talented stream – by invitation only
- Open to anyone in or outside Australia;
- If in Australia must be working in SA or about to start work there;
- If not in Australia must demonstrate extensive experience, working in senior or executive level roles in highly skilled jobs, in ???????Internationally renowned organisations, or multinational companies with a presence in South Australia, or have specialised experience or niche skills that are highly desired in one of South Australia’s critical priority sectors;

Outer Regional South Australia
- Must be currently living and working in Outer Regional South Australia for a minimum of 6 months;
- Any job – minimum 30 hours per week;
- Business must have been operating for a minimum of 12 months in the region;
- There are a type of work and salary restrictions for Subclass 190
Offshore Applicants – by invitation only
- South Australia will be assessing candidates on merit by the following factors, within their nominated occupation:
- Years and field of skilled employment
- English language ability
- EOI points
The pathways which we indicated are “By Invitation Only” require you to be pre-selected by the State and receive an invitation to apply for State Nomination, once this is an “invitation only” system. If SA agrees to nominate you, then you will be invited by SkillSelect to apply for the visa.
To be selected by SA, and invited by SkillSelect, you need first to submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) with SkillSelect.
