NT Occupation List indicates what professions are in high demand in the Territory and are needed to fill skill shortages. Everyone looking to apply for a Skilled Visa in The Northern Territory must have an occupation in the list and meet the state requirements to be nominated.
The NT Skilled Regional Visa Program – 190 and 491
If you are planning to apply for a permanent skilled nominated 190 visa or a temporary regional 491 visa in the NT, an important thing to have in mind is that to be pre-selected by the Territory you must first submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) and receive an invitation to apply for State Nomination.
If the NT agrees to nominate you, then you will be invited by SkillSelect to apply for the visa.
However, the Northern Territory’s Government can only grant you a state nomination if you meet:
- Australian Government’s standard requirements, and
- NT nomination eligibility requirements, and
- commit to living and working in the Territory within your skilled occupation for at least three years upon the grant of your visa.
Australian Government’s standard requirements
- Must nominate an occupation in the NT Skilled Occupation list;
- have a positive skills assessment in your nominated occupation;
- be under 45 years of age;
- meet the minimum English language requirement for your occupation;
- Achieve a minimum of 65 points in the points-test.
NT nomination requirements
There are different pathways to migrate to the NT:
Graduates in the NT
- Must have lived and studied in the NT for at least 2 years
- Must have completed one or more qualifications in a single tertiary course or a set of nested tertiary courses
- Must demonstrated genuine efforts to obtain employment from an NT employer in your nominated occupation or a closely related skilled occupation.
- Must have lived in the NT for a period of at least six months after completing your last qualification, while holding a visa with no work limitations (485 Graduate Visa)
Living and Working in the NT
190 visa requirements
- Must reside in the NT for at least 2 consecutive years including all dependents;
- Must have worked fulltime in any occupation in the NT list for at least two years;
- Must have job offer form another 12 months
491 visa requirements
- Must reside in the NT for at least 1 consecutive year including all dependents;
- Must have worked fulltime in any occupation in the NT list for at least 6 months;
- Must have job offer form another 12 months
NT Offshore applications
- Candidates from outside Australia can apply for a NT nomination, as long as their occupation is under the Northern Territory Offshore Migration Occupations List (NTOMOL), which we will share further in this blog post.

There is an NT Migration Occupation List but it only serves to “provide an indication as to which of the eligible skilled occupations are in demand in the NT.” Applicants can nominate any occupation in following list:
