IELTS One Skill Retake is an exciting new test option that can make it easier for you to achieve your desired IELTS score for your future migration or study plans.
If you didn’t reach your desired score on one section of the test, the IELTS One Skill Retake (OSR) could be an option for you. It’s an opportunity to retake just one section of the IELTS exam (Listening, Reading, Writing or Speaking), rather than the whole thing.
What is IELTS One Skill Retake, and how can it help you?
Like many test candidates, you may have taken IELTS a number of times and reached your goal in all but one of the skills. In the past, you always had to retake all four parts of the test, which involved a lot more study. There was also the stress and worry that you might not necessarily match your previous good performances. Taking One Skill Retake, you will be able to focus your study efforts to improve in the required skill area versus studying for four sections again.
How does the One Skill Retake option work?
You take the IELTS exam as you normally would and receive your scores for each of the four sections of the exam. If you are not satisfied with your score in one specific section, you can choose to retake that section only. Your scores for the other skills will be carried over from your previous exam. The One Skill Retake option must be taken within 60 days of your original test.
In Australia, instead of having to pay $410 for a complete IELTS test, you pay a lower fee of $259 to register for the One Skill Retake option. For IELTS One Skill Retake, you’re only able to take the particular section of the test once per each full IELTS test you have taken.
The One Skill Retake is the same format as the full test, except that you only complete the one part that you have chosen. You will get a new test report form with all four of your scores, the three with which you were happy the first time, and the fourth result from the One Skill Retake.
Overall, the One Skill Retake option is a great choice if you are looking to improve your overall IELTS score but only need to improve in one specific skill area.
Is the One Skill Retake the right choice for you?
Here are a few things to consider:
1. Cost: The One Skill Retake option is cheaper than retaking the entire exam. However, you will need to pay the additional fee each time you retake a section.
2. Time: The One Skill Retake option is a good choice if you have limited time available. If you are satisfied with your scores for three of the skills and do not need to improve them, you can commit all your preparation and practice time to the one skill that you need to improve because you don’t have to prepare for the entire exam.
3. Eligibility: Prior to booking your IELTS One Skill Retake, ensure you have checked this is accepted by the necessary organisations to which you are applying, whether it be a higher education organisation, professional body or an immigration department. The Australian Department of Home Affairs accepts IELTS One Skill Retake (OSR) for most visa subclasses.
5. Location: IELTS One Skill Retake is now available at IDP Melbourne, IDP Sydney, IDP Brisbane, IDP Adelaide, IDP Perth, IDP Cairns and IDP Wollongong. It’s coming soon to more test centres across Australia.
Tips for focusing on one skill area:
1. Identify the skill area that you need to improve in. The IELTS exam tests four skills: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. For IELTS OSR, you need only focus on one. You can devote four times the attention, time and commitment.
2. Improve with an IELTS course with E2. A free trial gives you access to hundreds of practice questions, sample live classes and more. You can upgrade to a paid package to access mock tests, teacher tutorials, teacher assessments, unlimited live classes and more.
3. Practise with an E2 Mock test to understand how you might perform under timed, exam conditions. You will get tailor-made feedback from expert markers, developing your confidence to perform at your best on exam day.
4. Get feedback from a tutor or teacher. Expert feedback on your practice tests and personalised guidance is invaluable in identifying areas for improvement. E2’s one-to-one teacher tutorials can help you identify strengths and weaknesses to help you improve fast.
5. Make a study schedule and stick to it. Consistent study and practice are the keys to improving your skills. Make a schedule that works for you and try to stick to it as closely as possible.
