Skilled Employer Sponsored Regional (Provisional) visa (subclass 494)

This visa is for skilled workers who want to work in regional Australia. It allows people to work in Australia under one of two streams: Employer Sponsored or Labour Agreement. The main requirements for the applicant include:

  • Have a full time job offer in an occupation listed on the short-term skilled occupations list (STSOL) or medium and long-term strategic skills list (MLTSSL) or the Regional Occupation List (ROL). The position needs to be in a designated Regional Area. At the time of writing this means the whole of Australia, except Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane Metropolitan areas.
  • Have at least 3 years full time relevant work experience in your nominated occupation and the relevant minimum qualification as per your occupation.
  • Obtain a positive Skills Assessment with the relevant Skills Assessment authority.
  • Meet the English language requirement – Competent English
  • Be aged under 45 years.
  • Meet health and character requirements

Employer Nomination Scheme visa (subclass 186)

This is a permanent residence visa for skilled workers. It allows you to work in Australia under one of three streams: the TRT (Temporary Residence Transition) stream, the Direct Entry stream, and the Labour Agreement stream. Common requirements for the applicant when it comes to the TRT and Direct Entry Stream include:

  • Be nominated by an Australian employer
  • Have an occupation on the list of eligible skilled occupations – at the moment the only list applicable is the MLTSSL – the Medium and Long Term Skills Shortage List
  • Be under 45 years of age.
  • Meet the English language requirements – Competent English
  • Meet health and character requirements

The TRT Stream at the moment of writing requires the visa applicant to have worked for the same Australian employer for a minimum of 3 years while holding the Subclass 482 visa. This is about to be changed by the government to go down to 2 years only.

The Direct Entry Stream doesn’t require you to have worked for the Australian employer at all but you must obtain a positive Skills Assessment and have a minimum of 3 years full time relevant work experience.
