NSW Occupation Lists have finally been published! They indicate what professions are in high demand in the state and are needed to fill skill shortages. Everyone looking to apply for a Skilled Visa in NSW must have an occupation in one of those lists and meet the state requirements to be nominated.
To apply for a permanent skilled nominated 190 visa or a temporary regional 491 visa with nomination by NSW, you must be pre-selected by the State and receive an invitation to apply for State Nomination, once this is an “invitation only” system. If NSW agrees to nominate you, then you will be invited by SkillSelect to apply for the visa.
To be selected by NSW, and invited by SkillSelect, you must first submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) with SkillSelect. You will only be invited by NSW, then the Department of Home Affairs, if you meet the basic requirements:
- Must nominate an occupation in one of the NSW Skilled Occupation lists;
- have a positive skills assessment in your nominated occupation;
- be under 45 years of age;
- meet the minimum English language requirement for your occupation;
Before digging into the NSW Occupation Lists, it is important to mention that candidates must also meet the specific requirements established by NSW, as well as for each one of the visa subclasses:
NSW 491 visa requirements updated for 2022-2023
Onshore and offshore applicants will be considered to apply for the Skilled Work Regional visa 491. Requirements:
- Candidates must nominate an occupation in the NSW Skilled Work Regional Skills List;
- Candidates must be currently living in NSW or living offshore for at least 3 continuous months;
- Each occupation has a minimum number of years of work experience required;
- Each occupation has a minimum score on the Points Test required.
Must apply under one of these Pathways:
- Pathway 1
- Apply directly to an RDA office where you want to live and work in for the first 3 years
- Recent Study in Regional NSW for a minimum of 2 years in a field closely related to the nominated occupation may waive the work experience requirement in this pathway
- Pathway 2
- Invitation by Investment NSW – No more Submission Windows or Registration of Interest
- Must submit EoI and wait to be invited. Not guaranteed.
NSW 190 visa requirements updated for 2022-2023

- Candidates must be currently living in NSW or living offshore for at least 6 continuous months;
- Each occupation has a minimum number of years of work experience required;
- Each occupation has a minimum score on the Points Test required.
It is not possible to apply for nomination directly, but rather it is necessary to submit an Expression of Interest and wait for NSW to invite you. No guarantees.
New minimum point scores and skilled work experience requirements for NSW
NSW have introduced new minimum point scores and years of skilled work experience requirements for each occupation in the 2022-23 financial year. According to NSW Business and Skilled Migration, the criteria have been revised and set at such a level that someone with these scores might realistically be invited to apply in 2022-23.
This is how it is going to work: if you are skilled as an Accountant, you must have a minimum point score of 110 and 3 years of eligible skilled work experience to be considered in an invitation round. However, Social Workers must have a minimum point score of 70, and there is no experience required.
